How Important Is Punctuation In Your Writing

Punctuation Are Very Important In Your Writing

Punctuation, in any piece of writing, may seem like the most insignificant part of the work, however, as far as the language, as well as its comprehension for the reader goes, is one of the most important parts of the work. A misplaced comma or wrong syntax can completely change what the person initially intended to say. While it may not even sound very valid in this digital era, punctuation, along with spellings, even more so today than ever before, is given more importance than ever before as being one of the marks of an educated writer. For this reason, writing without any prior proofreading or poor use of punctuation can ruin the quality of one’s writing drastically or change its meaning completely. For example,

  • Don’t, stop.
  • Don’t stop.
In this example even though both sentences use the same two words, they mean completely different ideas due to the placement of the comma. The first one urges the person to stop and not continue whatever they are doing while the latter encourages the person to continue with whatever they were doing. With a simple comma, two opposing sentences can be created using the same words.
Apart from changing the meaning of the sentences that you use, punctuation can also set the tone of your writing. Question marks, exclamation marks, full stops all serve to provide the tone that is desired. A misplaced question mark can turn a sentence which was initially meant to be statement into a rhetoric question or it could turn what was supposed to be a calm statement to an almost sarcastic or questioning tone. For example,

  • I was doing my work.
  • I was doing my work?
In the first part, the person in question simply states that they were doing their work in what seems to be a composed tone. In the second part though, the person seems to sarcastically point out they were doing their work. The tone of the writing can greatly change the response of the other person.
Another very common example about punctuation as helping change the tone of a writing is the following example where the punctuation alone can help set the entire tone of the conversation.

  • Come here right now!
  • Come here right now.
In the first instance the exclamation mark at the end of the sentence indicates the urgency of the situation while in the second instance, the full stop at the end of the sentence shows that the person being spoken to is just being called to a certain point. There is no similar sense of urgency in the second example.

Similarly, if we look at the following two examples this is how it would look like:

  • She is a very… different... kind of person.
  • She is a very different kind of person!
The ellipses used in the first instance show, both times, just how different the subject in question is. It indicates love for the other person. This is in comparison to the second instance where the sentence just indicates a person’s difference, more tersely that in the first example.

While the importance of punctuation cannot be denied, most students are wary about their use in which case students should use best assignment writing service for help. In this case, who better to employ than British Assignments Help?
